In support of the May 2016 SWS Conference in Corpus Christi, Texas, this post is to provide additional information about long term formal USDA-NRCS and university sponsored Texas Gulf Coast Prairie wet soil studies. Texas USDA-NRCS has made available on the internet two documents concerning long term wet soil studies for public use.
"Wet Soil Studies in the Texas Gulf Coast Prairie 1989-2004", is based on a presentation with additional comments given at a National Soil Science Society of America meeting and summarizes the results of three long term (over 15 year period) formal wet soil field studies in the Texas Gulf Coast Prairie.
The other document is the interagency field study, "Soil Characterization and Hydrological Monitoring Project, Brazoria County, Texas, Bottomland Hardwood Vertisols". Studies were sponsored by international, national, and university soil professionals.
The results of these studies were used in USDA-NRCS Soil Taxonomy updates (aquic conditions), Texas soil series classification and hydrology interpretations, USDA-NRCS Hydric Soil Field Indicators (Field Indicators A16 Coast Prairie Redox and F18 Reduced Vertic), and the updated COE hydric soil field indicators.
