Guidelines for Student Travel Awards to ASB Annual Meeting

    1. The award must be announced in the Southeastern Biology Call for Papers issue. This requires that the committee obtain from the appropriate Association of Southeastern Biologists (ASB) officers deadlines for the announcement. This is very important; usually the ASB Editor and the present Program Chair will have these details by early summer prior to the next year’s meeting.
    2. The award should also be announced in the fall and spring Chapter newsletter and in the September and December editions of the SWS Bulletin. Award winners should also be announced in the summer Chapter newsletter and in the June issue of the SWS Bulletin.
    3. The announcement must include the following:
      1. The student’s research must pertain to wetland science.
      2. Applicants must send a copy of the abstract to the chair (physical and email addresses should be included in announcement) of the award committee at the time of submission to the ASB Program. I.E. one copy to ASB and one to us. This should be made clear in the announcement. Just checking the box is not sufficient.
      3. Announcement should inform the awardees that they are invited to a free lunch associated with the chapter luncheon and that this is where they can pick up their travel award checks.
      4. A sample announcement is provided below.
    4. Applications for travel awards will be screened by the award committee for relevance to wetland science. Applicant abstracts will then be ranked and up to five-student travel awards will be given and the travel money disbursed evenly.
    5. Oral papers given by awardees during the ASB meeting should acknowledge the support provided by the South Atlantic Chapter of SWS, either verbally or written.
    6. The Awards Committee shall consist of two members who will rank the abstracts and recommend winning applications to the Executive Committee for final approval. This committee will consist of two chapter members, who will serve staggered terms. The Executive Committee will appoint one committee member to act as chair.
    7. Chair of the Awards Committee for the present year may announce the names of the awardees at the ASB Annual Banquet.
    8. Students may receive support in multiple years and may receive support if they are also receiving support from other sources. However, the Awards Committee and the Executive Committee will retain the ability to eliminate a student from consideration if the student has received multiple Chapter awards in previous years or if receiving support from other awards.

SOCIETY OF WETLAND SCIENTISTS
SOUTH ATLANTIC CHAPTER
STUDENT TRAVEL AWARD

The South Atlantic Chapter of the Society of Wetland Scientists (SWS) will again offer it’s student travel award to support students presenting wetland research at the Association of Southern Biologists (ASB) annual meeting. We will award at least $100 to a maximum of five students. The Chapter’s Awards and Executive Committees will judge the applicants based on the scientific quality and importance of their research as described in the abstract. All students presenting research on a wetland topic are eligible; membership in SWS is not required. Please check the appropriate box on the ASB registration form and submit your abstract as instructed in the ASB call for papers. Further, applicants must also submit their abstract, by email, to [Awards Committee Chair] at [email]. (Please note that if the student does not send an additional abstract to [Awards Committee Chair], they will not win a travel award.)  Award winners will be invited to the Chapter’s luncheon meeting (no charge for awardees) held during the ASB annual meeting.
