Research Grants Program

Microscope ImageThe South Atlantic Chapter (SAC) of the Society of Wetland Scientists has established two (2) $750 general research grants to be awarded annually to undergraduate or graduate students (either Masters or Doctoral students) engaged in research that has direct applicability to the advancement of wetland science. Applicants must be students at an accredited university conducting research within, in part, the regional boundaries of SAC. Applicants do not have to be members of the Society to apply.  However, if competing proposal are judged to be nearly equal by the Awards Committee, preference will be given to the student who is a member in good standing of the Society. Applications will be judged on the scientific merit and innovative aspects of their research proposals. Grants are intended to aid but not to provide sole support of, student research.

Grants are awarded by the Executive Committee of the South Atlantic Chapter acting upon the recommendation of its Research Grants Committee.  The Research Grants Committee is comprised of four members of the South Atlantic Chapter appointed by the Chapter Chair. Each application is reviewed and ranked by the Committee and the results are presented to the Executive Committee for a final decision.

Applications will be considered for funding periods of no more than one year. However a previous awardee may reapply for additional support, with a restriction that no individual will receive more than three years of support. At the end of each grant period the awardee is expected to produce a report briefly updating the Research Grant Committee on the status of their research.  If an additional year of funding is requested the student’s research advisor or supervising professor will need to submit a statement that the student’s research project is proceeding as expected.  Students are encouraged to seek publication of their research results. For any published research SAC should be acknowledged for its financial support through the Chapters Research Grant Program.

Grant Application

For streamlining purposes, applicants must follow the rules and procedures of the SWS Student Grant Program, with the following modifications specific to the SAC Student Research Grants:

  • Research much take place, in part, within the SAC boundaries (Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, West Virginia, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands)

  • A separate budget justification must be provided for the SAC application (students cannot ask to fund the same items from both the SWS and SAC competitions; send a SAC-specific "Student Grant Application Form")

  • The research proposal and CV/resume must be emailed as attachments to the SAC Awards Committee Chair.

    • In the text of your email, list your full name, institution and program, whether you are a masters or doctoral student, anticipated graduation date, and whether you are a member of SWS (membership not required). In addition, let the SAC awards chair know if you are also applying for the SWS Research Grant.

Evaluation Criteria

Members of the Awards Committee will evaluate each proposal independently.  Proposals will be ranked according to the total number of proposals received. Rankings will be tabulated and averaged and the proposals receiving the highest average scores will be forwarded to the Executive Committee for award approval.

Proposals will be ranked on the clarity of the hypotheses or project objectives, the relevance and significance of the project to the advancement to wetland science, the adequacy of the experimental design or research approach.

Application Deadline

Application deadlines are the same as the SWS Student Grants Program, which is usually sometime in February for that year.  See SWS website for details.
