Dear Colleagues,
This time I offer you greetings from the second-most northern state in our Chapter. (As my geographical oversight in the last newsletter was pointed out by a very astute member, my sincerest apologies to West Virginia.) Many greetings, nonetheless.
On behalf of your Executive Committee, I am pleased to report that the South Atlantic Chapter has been feverishly working to offer you another annual workshop – this time in sunny Florida. We are very thankful for the Chapter members that have volunteered their time to assist in organizing this workshop. Please refer to the preliminary announcement in this newsletter as well as future announcements, and help us to spread the word.
During the Chapter business meeting in Lake Placid, members participated in a lively discussion of the possibility of hosting the 2005 International SWS annual meeting. The SWS Board voted to forego the original plans for 2005 for a number of reasons and is currently looking for possible host Chapters. No final decisions were made at our meeting, but a number of members expressed interested in holding the annual meeting in the southern region of our Chapter, such as South Carolina, Georgia, or Florida. I am very interested in hearing from you on whether or not the South Atlantic Chapter should host 2005 and, if so, where. More importantly, as these are work-intensive efforts, are you interested in volunteering your time to help organize an annual meeting? I need to hear from you all on this, if we intend to move forward, so call me at 804-780-1392 or email ajennings@savethebay.cbf.org.
And, keep a look about for the fall workshop announcement!

Best regards,
Ann Jennings

The following students received travel awards to the 2002 annual Meeting of the Association of Southeastern Biologists (ASB): , Ohio University Brett McMillan, Old Dominion University Alice Harper, Delta State University Mehmet Ozalp, Clemson University Be sure to check the webpage for a brief description of the research they presented! The South Atlantic Chapter of the Society of Wetland Scientists (SWS) will again offer it’s student travel award to support students presenting wetland research at the 2003 ASB annual meeting. We will award at least $100 to a maximum of five students. The Chapter’s Awards and Executive Committees will judge the applicants based on the scientific quality and importance of their research as described in the abstract. All students presenting research on a wetland topic are eligible; membership in SWS is not required. Please check the appropriate box on the ASB registration form and submit the abstract as instructed in the ASB call for papers. Further, applicants must also submit their abstract, by electronic mail, to Cliff R. Hupp at crhupp@usgs.gov. Award winners will be invited to the Chapter’s luncheon meeting (no charge for awardees) held during the ASB annual meeting.!!Fall Workshop Announcement!!: This is a preliminary announcement of the SWS South Atlantic Chapter Fall Workshop: BEHEMOTH WETLAND RESTORATIONS CASE STUDIES AND LESSONS LEARNED on November 20, 2002 at the University of Florida Hotel and Conference Center in Gainesville, Florida. The workshop is being organized in partnership with the Center for Wetlands, University of Florida and the St. Johns River Water Management District. It will serve to highlight specific cases of large-scale wetland restoration efforts and the research into those efforts. We hope particularly to share the lessons learned about wetland restoration, its successes and failings, taking a landscape perspective. We’ll ask the question, do these "behemoth" wetland restorations serve to magnify the principles fundamental to all restorations, whatever the size? More information on the workshop and registration will be posted on the Chapter web site at www.sws.org/regional/SouthAtlantic in late September.
