A system for mapping riparian areas in the western United States
17) Abstract Text:
The U. S. Fish and Wildlife (USFWS) has prepared a document titled "A system for mapping riparian areas in the western United States". The National Wetlands Inventory (NWI) program, of the USFWS, has extensive mapping knowledge and espertise involving wetland identification and classification, photointerpretation, and digital data. Reflecting this expertise, NWI personnel developed a riparian defintion and conventions for use of aerial photography and to guide mapping of riparian areas. The area of applicability is the arid west where the mean annual evaporation exceeds mean annual precipitaiton. The document defines riparian, establishes a riparian mapping system, and photointerpretation and cartographic procedures. The NWI used these procedures for riparian mapping in the Great Basin National Park, NV in conjunction with wetland mapping.
