Including Wetlands in Watershed Assessment

Watershed assessment has become the tool of choice for diagnosing landscape conditions in the Pacific northwest. Wetland data and its use has been a major failure of the federal assessments to date. Oregon is developing a citizen watershed assessment tool that will require consideration of wetlands in the assessment. The functions of wetlands are too important to omit from watershed assessment. The explicit inclusion of wetlands will be used to move the completion of the NWI for the state and to persue the includion of NWI data in federal assessments.
