Progress Report on the Schel-chelb Estuarine Mitigation Site:
History, Development, and Monitoring
17) Abstract Text:
In 1993 the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) agreed to
share a portion of a multi-agency effort associated with the cleanup of the
Wykoff/Eagle Harbor Superfund Site located in central Puget Sound on the
eastern border of Bainbridge Island, Washington. Cleanup efforts of this site
resulted in some loss of aquatic habitat. Mitigation plans developed by
WSDOT combined on-site and off-site components, including establishment of
an eelgrass meadow (on-site) and construction of an estuarine wetland
(off-site) on the south end of the island. Long term monitoring will be
conducted by WSDOT for the soil and sediment remediation and of the
estuarine and eelgrass communities established. This presentation will
focus on the events leading to the development of the Schel-chelb site,
its design and construction, and the long-term monitoring planned to track
its development.
