The Status of Section 401 Water Quality Certification in Washington State.

17) Abstract Text:

The Washington Department of Ecology (Ecology) is responsible for implementing Section 401 water quality certifications under the federal Clean Water Act in the state of Washington. Section 401 provides states the opportunity to approve, deny, or condition federal permits that authorize impacts to wetlands and other waters under Clean Water Act jurisdiction.

This presentation will provide a brief overview of Ecology's approach to project review and permit decisions. It will include discussion of the types of permits currently available, general permit conditions, proposed permits and conditions, and an evaluation of how the state's approach is working to protect wetland resources.
