Water Quality and Wetlands - Regulatory and Policy Developments at the Department of Ecolgy
17) Abstract Text:
Three water quality related initiatives have recently been completed and should improve how the Department of Ecology makes decisions for wetland projects.
* Water Quality Standards for Wetlands were adopted into Chapter 173-201A WAC.
* Water Reclamation and Reuse Standards were completed.
* Puget Sound Stormwater Management Research Program released their final report.
The Water Quality Standards contain narrative and numeric criteria designed to protect the beneficial uses of wetlands. The Water Reuse Standards set limits and treatment requirements for discharging treated wastewater into natural and constructed wetlands. The Puget Sound Stormwater Report contains guidelines for designing stormwater projects to prevent or reduce negative impacts to wetlands.
This presentation will look (briefly) at each of these programs and discuss how Ecology and others can use this information to design projects and make permit decisions that better protect wetlands.
