Estuarine Wetland Restoration: Key Issues and Challenges
17) Abstract Text:
Nisqually National Wildlife Refuge (NWR) in Olympia, Washington, is in the process of planning and designing habitat restoration projects in the Nisqually River delta. A panel of Pacific NW restoration experts will address scientific issues and challenges of the project. The panelists will discuss estuarine wetland restoration activities in Puget Sound as they relate to Nisqually NWR. Panelists include: Charles Simenstad, University of Washington, Wetland Ecosystems Team; Ron Thom, Battelle Marine Science Laboratory (invited); Richard Gersib, Washington Department of Ecology, Wetlands Characterization Team; Pat Cagney, US Army Corps of Engineers, Environmental Resources Section; and Craig Cornu, Stewardship Program Coordinator, South Slough Natural Estuarine Research Reserve, Oregon. The discussion format will be informal and flexible, involving audience participation, as panelists share their expertise and experiences in the Pacific Northwest. Discussion topics include examples of restoration project successes and failures, developing Refuge restoration criteria and design, critical assumptions involved in restoration options, monitoring and evaluation, and watershed management issues.
