Workshop Description

The intensive daylong seminar will focus on collection and identification of benthic macro-invertebrates in a variety of freshwater systems. Indoor instruction on collecting, sorting, identifying, preserving, and vouchering specimens will precede a field collecting session. Lab determinations from these collections will be used to demonstrate major groups of invertebrates. The principal manual for this workshop will be the New England Freshwater Invertebrate Bio-monitoring Protocol developed by Anna Hicks.

Workshop fees include New England Freshwater Invertebrate Bio-monitoring Protocol manual published by UMASS extension, identification guidelines, continental breakfast & lunch

Workshop begins in the classroom at 8:30 am. Continental Breakfast will be served from 7:00 to 8:30 am in Lobby of Marcucella Hall near Room 102.

Will be held rain or shine!

Bring sunscreen, insect repellant, water bottle, raingear, rubber boots or other footwear that can get wet, and a calculator.
Recommended clothing: T-shirt with long-sleeve cotton light-weight shirt, long pants, sun hat

Instructors

Dr. Rick Van de Poll is a certified wetland scientist and wildlife biologist from central New Hampshire. He has 15 years of teaching experience at Antioch New England Graduate School and is the principal of Ecosystem Management Consultants, an environmental consulting firm that provides bio-inventory and assessment work for land trusts, municipalities and private landowners in New England.

Anna Hicks, after gaining two Master of Science degrees through the University of Massachusetts, worked for four years as an Extension Educator conducting numerous workshops for agency personnel, consultants, conservation commissioners, educators and volunteers. She taught a course on Aquatic Entomology in the Biology Department of UMass. As a research aquatic entomologist and biomonitor she has (and continues to) conducted biomonitoring projects using aquatic invertebrates to evaluate the health of streams, wetlands and salt marshes for government agencies, the Wampanoag Tribe, and private consultants. She has authored several manuals providing instruction on her biomonitoring techniques.

Early registration is open to SWS members. If the workshop is not full by June 1st , registration is open to non-SWS members.

Lodging is available at Franklin Pierce College, but not included in workshop registration fee. The FPC lodging rates are $25.00 per person per night for double occupancy and $35.00 per person per night for single occupancy.
