Mid-Atlantic Chapter Members -

Happy Holidays!

It has been quite a year.

In the new year, I hope we can all focus on restoring our spirits and our

world.

For the Mid-Atlantic Chapter, much will be occurring in the new year.

The Chapter is a sponsor of the Phragmites Forum to be held January 6th

through the 9th www.njmsc.org . In February, we are attempting to put

together a dinner lecture in Washington DC and a working meeting for

watershed managers and wetland managers in New Jersey. Board

elections will be held in early May, so think about nominating someone

or volunteering yourself.

And in June, your Chapter is sponsoring the annual SWS meeting in

Lake Placid!

Having made the drive to Lake Placid just before Thanksgiving, I can say

that it is quite a drive (about 5 hours from the New York metropolitan

area) but worth it once you get there. It is a lovely town with much to

offer any outdoor enthusiast and the Lake Placid Resort & Golf Club is a

beautiful setting for the conference.

The theme for the conference is “Wetland Linkages” and while planning

for the conference, we realized that the theme of linkages has so much

more meaning at this time. Our planning efforts have been focused on

creating a conference that will bring us together to learn about and

discuss some difficult scientific issues, but during the off-hours, relax in

an informal and family-like atmosphere at a low cost. Off-hours activities

include exciting and interesting field trips, morning birding walks and

jogs around Mirror Lake, and a Tuesday night barbecue with Adirondack

storytelling, live music, and the SWS all-star jam. As I was writing this, I

had cause to pull out my dictionary for something else, and happened to

look up the meaning of “symposium” which, in ancient Greece, was an

entertainment characterized by drinking, music and intellectual

discussion. So I think we can call our Tuesday night gathering a special

“symposium.”

Other symposium include:

USEPA’s “Isolated” Wetlands

Association of State Wetland Manager’s Wetlands and Climate Change

Adirondack Park Agency’s Natural History of the Adirondacks

American Water Resources Association’s Wetlands and Groundwater

Aquatic Ecosystem Health and Management Society’s

Coastal Wetlands of the Laurentian Great Lakes - Health,

Sustainability and Management

Plus all of our contributed sessions. Check out the webpage for more

info. (www.sws.org/lakeplacid )

We will continue to try to bring the Chapter closer to each of you and

truly make it your chapter. But as always, we need you to make the

suggestion and then we can work with you to make it happen.

Thanks to Jane Rowan for all of her helpful suggestions and

communication!
