New wetland inventory in Manitoba
A 1:1,000,000 wetland map for the province of Manitoba was recently completed at the University of Alberta in conjunction with the Canadian Forest Service and Manitoba Geological Services. This map summarizes a more detailed and comprehensive inventory where wetlands and wetland complexes were classified from 1:40,000 to 1:60,000 aerial photographs and transferred to 1:250,000 base maps. Wetlands were classified using a hierarchical wetland classification that includes three levels: 1) wetland class (bog, fen, marsh, swamp, shallow open water); 2) vegetation modifier (forested, treed, open), and 3) landform modifier (patterned, non-patterned, permafrost, degraded permafrost). Individual wetlands were rarely identified, with most polygons being composed of wetland complexes with components identified to the nearest 10% cover. 1:250,000 base maps are available for viewing at the University of Alberta. 1:1,000,000 maps are available while supplies last, free of charge, from Linda Halsey, Department of Biological Sciences, University of Alberta, Edmonton, AB, T6G 2E9 (e-mail: lhalsey@gpu.srv.ualberta.ca).
