Kelly Reiss

Kelly Chinners Reiss, PhD, is a research scientist with the HT Odum Center for Wetlands, Department of Environmental Engineering Sciences, University of Florida, and an instructor in environmental science with the School of Science and Technology, American Public University System. She received her B.S. degree in Forest Resources and Conservation from the University of Florida; her M.S. degree in Systems Ecology in 2000 also from UF, with thesis research exploring the role of vines in wetland primary succession following landscape creation after phosphate mining. Kelly also went on to get her PhD under Dr. Mark T. Brown as advisor with dissertation research focused on the development of indices of biotic integrity for the diatom, macrophyte, and macroinvertebrate community assemblages for Florida depressional wetlands, called the Florida Wetland Condition Index.

Since that time her research has included projects on hydrology and nutrient concentrations in isolated wetlands; nutrient effects on springs; wetland mitigation banking; developing a training manual for the Uniform Mitigation Assessment Method (UMAM) for the Florida Department of Environmental Protection; and developing biological indicators for forested strand and floodplain wetlands. Her current research involves managing the Florida effort on the US Environmental Protection Agency’s National Wetland Condition Assessment, expanding past work on indicators of wetland condition, understanding dissolved oxygen levels in reference wetlands, and expanding efforts on the Level I tool the Landscape Development Intensity (LDI) index for a desktop evaluation of wetland condition. Kelly is glad to bring her expertise and enthusiasm to the South Atlantic Chapter.  You may contact her at kcr@ufl.edu if you have any questions or suggestions.
