Thesis Abstract

This paper presents a research proposal entitled “Assessment of Human Impacts on Water Quality of Enfranze Wetland, South of Lake Tana, Ethiopia”. Water storage, recharging, discharging, water purification and nutrient trapping, are amongst the most valued hydrological functions of this wetland. Its swampy part is blended with a patch of papyrus population. The water purification function of the wetland provides relatively clean water for drinking, wildlife and fishery, irrigation and other domestic uses. Recharged and filtered ground water is piped from a built-over tanker to Bahir Dar city to meet urban residents’ ever-increasing water demands for drinking, but often under-valued as result of market failure. The integrity of this wetland is being threatened by human induced activities. Yet, a complete assessment of water quality based on the physico-chemical, biological and hydrologic components of this vital wetland are missed. This study is, therefore, aimed to assess and characterize selected water quality variables for long-term water quality monitoring for enhanced management decisions.A total of about 14 parameters (physicochemical parameters, PH, TO, EC, S2-, SO4 2-, BOD5, DO, PO4 3-, NH3-N and NO3-N, TSS, TDS and discharge, m3/s), macrophye (community abundance and lognormal distribution) and monetary valuation will be employed during the assessment. Stratified sampling methods will be used during samplings. Two sampling strata (upstream and downstream) will be laid out for physico-chemical sample collections and measurements. Where as transects will be placed to study macrophyte composition and abundance. Systematic random sampling will be used to select sampling units. Valuation of the total economic values of the wetland will be estimated by conducting detailed inventory on the services employing PRA technique and Ramsar guidelines. The monetary value for water purification function of the wetland will be estimated by replacement method i.e. Construction of Water Infiltration Plant on behalf of the wetland hydrologic function assuming as it has been destroyed.The study is scheduled for one year (August 2009 to June/2010). The total research budget is amounted to be US$ 4,515 or 45,150 ET Birr, of which US$3,515 be solicited from donors and US$1000 be from the government (see work plan). Government contribution is already secured. The results of the research are expected to contribute to the commitment of the government to enhance sustainable use of wetlands and water quality management. Furthermore, it will also contribute to meet the Millennium Development Goal (MDG) target No 10; World Health Organization (WHO).
