Amy Jacob Recieves Delaware Award for Excellence 5/10/08
SWS member and President-Elect of the Mid-Atlantic Chapter was one of five 2008 recipients of the prestigious Delaware Award for Excellence. The award was presented this week by the Governor of Delaware. Amy was recognized for innovations in rapid wetland assessment methods that have reduced costs and increased the number of wetlands assessed each year in the state of Delaware. Congratulations Amy!!
World Wetland Day Event in Ohio! 5/7/08
One hundred people came to the World Wetlands Day Breakfast in Columbus, Ohio organized by SWS Past President Bill Mitsch. Dr. Mitsch and the Ohio State University President Gordon Gee (left) welcomed guests to the breakfast and honored "Olentangy Olga" (Click for Classic Photo). ACE Proposes New Wetland Mitigation Success Rule 4/11/08
The ACE and EPA published a new rule in the April 10th Federal Register that establishes performance standards and criteria for wetlands created to offset those lost as the result of an ACE permit. You can read the new rule and a nice article about it in Science Magazine
Contribute To Transportation Research Priorities 4/7/08
Submit ideas for avoiding and mitigating highway project impacts on wetlands to a database created by the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials. Here is just one example that concerns the Migratory Bird Treaty Act.
Wetland Protection Series Published! Free Download 1/27/08
The Center for Watershed Protection prepared a series of articles on Wetlands and Watersheds. They integrate local wetland protection into a watershed framework, and are written for natural resources managers and land planners. Topics include Impacts of Urbanization on Wetlands, Using Local Watershed Plans to Protect Wetlands, Adapting Watershed Tools to Protect Wetlands, and The Next Generation of Stormwater Wetlands.
