Special Facilities:
The Olentangy River Wetland Research Park at The Ohio State University is designed to be one of the most comprehensive wetland research and education facilities in the nation at a major university. It is located on a 30-acre site owned by The Ohio State University, immediately north of the Columbus campus. The site has 12 acres of experimental marshes, 13 acres of bottomland forest, 80 experimental wetland mesocosms, 1/4 mile of boardwalks, tool sheds, an access road, the Olentangy River bikepath, a river intake system, an emergency phone, greenhouses, a groundwater well network, a swampmobile, and the newly completed Sandefur Wetlands Pavilion that was built specifically for the public to view the wetlands. Phase 1 of site development, which featured construction of two 2.5-acre deep-water marshes and a river water delivery system, was completed in 1994. Phases 2 and 3, which involve establishing the infrastructure for research and education of the site, constructing additional wetlands, and building a wetland research and education building have been under development since 1994.
Recently funding was made available from the state of Ohio for a wetland research and education building and a new Center for Wetland and River Restoration that will provide an organizational nucleus for 40 scientists from the 5 Ohio universities and colleges (The Ohio State University, Shawnee State University, Wright State University, Youngstown State University, and Kenyon College) and others in Ohio to collaborate on the science and engineering involved in the restoration of Ohio's wetlands and rivers. Research will focus on both basic and applied aspects of wetland creation and restoration, water pollution control and flood prevention with wetlands, appropriate wetland habitat for wildlife, and river and watershed restoration.
