Our student members are active in many different chapter activities, like presenting their work at the SWS Annual Meeting. If you are interested in starting a Student Association at your college or university, please contact NCC leadership.
The North Central Chapter of SWS encourages student participation in regional, national and international meetings. To assist students in this, the chapter sponsors an annual competition for Student Travel Awards.
This year, the chapter is pleased to announce the availability of one $750 travel grant, for students from the NCC, to attend the 2017 SWS Annual Meeting, held June 5-8, 2017 in San Juan, Puerto Rico. The intent of this award is to encourage student participation in this meeting by assisting with associated costs (travel, registration fees, etc.).
This competition is open to currently enrolled graduate or undergraduate students, who are SWS members in good standing within the NCC region (NCC states include ND, SD, NE, MN, IA, WI, IL, MI, IN, and OH). Selected students are expected to submit an abstract and make an oral or poster presentation at the meeting.
Required Application Materials
1) Proof of current student status (photocopy of a university ID or letter from academic advisor)
2) A copy of your submitted abstract (please indicate whether you are presenting an oral or poster presentation)
3) A letter or email from the meeting coordinator stating the acceptance of your abstract
4) A short (1-2-page) letter describing your studies, career goals and why you would like to receive this award
5) Estimated budget, including all anticipated expenses and portion for which this award would be used
Applications can be emailed or mailed to the Chair of the NCC Awards Committee, Karen Mangan (Karen_Mangan@fws.gov), 0137 Rustic Campus Drive, Ullin, Illinois, 62992. Applications must be emailed or postmarked by March 31, 2017 to be considered.
Awards will be made by a selection committee on the basis of the merit of each candidate and the quality of the submitted abstract. Decisions of the selection committee are final. The committee reserves the right to withhold the award if suitable candidates are not found or if funds are not available. Following the meeting, the awardees must provide proof of registration and attendance (e.g., receipts) to receive the award.
